Biographical History

Warren Allen Sawyer, known by many as "Buz", was born in Bay Shore, New York on 22 June 1937 to Dr. George J. Sawyer and Thelma Caldwell Sawyer. He was educated at McDonough School in Baltimore and later received a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from Hampden-Sydney College and a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In 1966, he became the director of the library at the College of Charleston. In 1968, he resigned his post with the College to accept the position of director of Libraries and Learning Resources at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC); an office he would hold until his death. During his tenure at MUSC, Sawyer planned the institution's new library in 1972 and its resource center in 1977. He also served as the Secretary of Faculty from 1976-1989 and was granted the rank of professor in 1984. Throughout his career, Sawyer was active in organizations and committees on both the local and national level. His professional involvements include: Biomedical Library Review Committee of the National Library of Medicine (1976-1980); Long Range Planning Task Force of the National Library of Medicine (1985-1986); Educational Board of the Association of Health Science Library Directors; Consortium of Southern Biomedical Libraries (founder and president); Executive Committee of the Southeastern Regional Medical Library Program (1968-1982); Executive Committee of the South Carolina Health Information Network (SCHIN); and Visiting Research Associate at the Institute of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University (1986). He was also a member of the Robert Wilson Medical History Club, the Waring Library Society, and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
