Biographical History

Founded in 1870 under the auspices of the American Home Missionary Society of the Baptist Church as Benedict Institute when Mrs. Bathsheba A. Benedict of Pawtucket, R.I., gave the society $5,000, a small bequest from her husband; originally designed to educate ministers and teachers the institution is now independent. Upward Bound is a twelve month federally funded college preparatory program administered by the United States Department of Education and provides survival skills seminars, comprehensive counseling services, and recreational and enrichment activities to enhance the students' chances for success in college.
