Biographical History
Soldier, attorney, and thirty-fourth governor of Arkansas, 1949-1953. Born Columbia County 1912. Raised in Hot Springs (Garland County), attended University of Arkansas and earned a law degree in 1936. McMath practiced law in Hot Springs until World War II when he entered the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific and returned to Hot Springs after the war to enter politics. McMath was elected Garland County prosecuting attorney in 1946 and governor of Arkansas in 1948. McMath lost his bid for a third term in 1952 and practiced law in Little Rock thereafter. He ran unsuccessfuly for the U.S. Senate in 1954 and again for governor in 1962. McMath also remained active in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and served in the Vietnam War, eventually earning the rank of Major General.
