Percy A. Scholes was an English lexicologist and writer on music. Largely self-taught, he graduated from Oxford and began working as a journalist and lecturer. During his remarkably active life in music, he was a teacher, critic, editor, lecturer, and author, known for his early support of broadcasting, the gramophone, and the pianola. Among many accomplishments, the Oxford Companion to Music remains an outstanding achievement.
