Biographical History

Pioneer family that was prominent in the African-American community in Seattle, Washington. Represented in the records are John T. Gayton (circa 1869-1954), founder of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church and the East Madison Young Men's Christian Association, both in Seattle, who migrated to Seattle in 1889; his son, John J. Gayton; and John J.'s sons, Carver and Gary Gayton.
