The Lord Eldon was built in South Shields, England, in 1801, and weighed 550 tons. In mid-June 1802, the Lord Eldon embarked for Bengal, India, via St. Helena and the Cape of Good Hope. The ship was employed by the East India Company and sailed under Captain J. Sweete.
