Biographical History

Clarence Irving Lewis, born 1883 in Massachusetts, was a professor of philosophy. Lewis taught at the University of California (1911-1920) and Harvard (1920-?) and was the author of several philosophic works. He died in 1964.

C.I. Lewis taught philosophy at Stanford for several years following his retirement from Harvard. While John Hammond was a grad student there (1955-60) he took some courses from Lewis, and Lewis gave him these corrected galleys.
