Anne McMath was born December 20, 1920 in Slate Spring, Mississippi. She graduated from the local high school and continued with her studies for another two years at Mississippi State College for Women. She met her future husband, Sidney Sanders McMath, in Washington, D.C., while working as a congressional secretary on Capitol Hill. They were married on October 5, 1944, and on January 10, 1949, Sid McMath became the thirty-fourth Governor of Arkansas. Anne McMath played the role of first lady from 1949 to 1953. Since leaving public life she has been active in various civic organizations.
