William Grover Moore, Jr. (b. May 18, 1920, Waco, Tex.), U.S. Air Force officer, enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet and received his commission in 1941. During World War II, he commanded the 777th Bombardment Squadron, 15th Air Force, and during the Korean War, he commanded the 3rd Bombardment Group. From 1957 to 1961, he served as assistant deputy chief of staff, operations, at HQ U.S. Air Forces in Europe, and in 1962 began his airlift career as commander, 314th Group Carrier Wing. In Vietnam (1966) he commanded the 834th Air Division with responsibility for all tactical airlift during that conflict. In the 1970s, General Moore was commander, 22nd Air Force (Military Airlift Command) and 13th Air Force based in the Philippines. He was also chief of staff, Pacific Command, in 1977 became commander in chief, Military Airlift Command, and retired in 1979.
