Biographical History
Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing (Essex County, N.J.), founded in 1882 through the efforts of Dr. Thomas W. Harvey, as the Orange Training School for Nurses. Taken over by Orange Memorial Hospital in 1906, the school name was officially changed in 1919. As part of their training in the early 1900s, nursing students were required to spend three month's residence in the Orange Settlement on Valley Street, serving as visiting nurses for the poor. The last class of the Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing graduated in 1982.
Prominent school directors included Margaret Ashmun (1923-1949) and Margaret B. Allen (1949-1967), who served in their positions for a total of 44 years.
