Biographical History
Professor of Spanish literature in both Europe and America and an award-winning poet. He went into exile in 1938 and settled in the United States in 1940.
Guillén (1893-1984) was a Spanish lyric poet.
Jorge Guillén, a Spanish poet, published Cantico in 1964, his first book to appear in English. The bilingual edition contained translations by Norman Di Giovanni, Richard Wilbur, W.S. Merwin, Alastair Reed, Alan Dugan, Barbara Howes, and others.
Biographical Note: Jorge Guillén was a Spanish poet and teacher. He was born in 1893 and taught in the United States from 1938-1958.
His opposition to Franco during the Spanish Civil War led him into self-imposed exile. While in the U.S., he taught at Middlebury, Wellesley, Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, and Ohio State. He died in 1984 at age 90 in Malago, Spain and was survived by his second wife and two children.
