Biographical History

Caroline Dexter was born in Nottingham, England and emigrated to Australia in 1855 following her marriage to the painter William Dexter. Together they opened a Gallery of Arts and School of Design in Sydney but the venture failed and following her separation from William she moved to Melbourne. There she was active in the establishment of the Institute of Hygiene, that promoted women's rights, in editing the first all-women publication in Australia, Interpreter (1861), and in her patronage of local artists and writers notably in the suburb of Brighton.
