Biographical History
Patrick V. Garland served as a firearms examiner for the United States Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory, as well as for state and county criminal investigation laboratories in Virginia, Tennessee, and Florida.
A native of New York state, Patrick V. Garland joined the U.S. Army in 1954, serving as an airborne infantryman until 1957. He later served as a
military policeman (1957-1963) and as a special agent for the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command (1963-1967). In 1967, Garland became a firearms examiner for the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory at Fort Gordon, Georgia. From 1973 to 1974, he was firearms examiner for the U. S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (Europe) in Frankfort, Germany.
Retiring from the Army as a master sergeant, Garland became firearms examiner for the
Tidewater Regional Crime Laboratory, Virginia Bureau of Forensic Sciences, a position he held from 1974 to 1977. From 1977 to 1982, Garland was senior firearms examiner for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s crime laboratory and subsequently served as firearms examiner for the Broward County (FL) Sheriff’s Department crime laboratory. In 1995, he was a private contractor in “Operation Clean-up” at the F.B.I. Academy’s Forensic Science Research and Training Center, examining firearms cases from the Washington, D.C. police department.
