Biographical History
Aliki Liacouras Brandenberg was born in New Jersey to parents who were recent immigrants from Greece. She graduated from Philadelphia Museum School of Art amd began working as a muralist and commercial artist in Philadelphia and New York City. On a trip to Italy she met Franz Brandeberg and married him, moving to his native Switzerland. She wrote her first book, The Story of William Tell (1960), drawing on her visit to the nearby Swiss state where Tell had lived. Later that year the Brandenbergs moved to New York where she was asked to illustrate books for other authors, began writing a second book of her own, My Five Senses. She has since created over 100 publications for children, fiction and nonfiction. She is well known for her science boooks, written on the primer level, but introducing subjects complex enough for adults to enjoy reading. Aliki biographies include George Washington Carver, Johnny Appleseed, William Tell, Ben Franklin, Diogenes, Willima Penn, and others.
