Biographical History
Historical Background
From the time the University of California, Irvine campus opened in 1965, the office of Student Affairs was charged with coordinating all student services provided by the university. The office provided students with services such as registration and admissions, housing and food services, financial aid, student health, and personal counseling. By 1966 the Dean of Students, the Coordinator of Academic Advising, the Foreign Student Advisor, and the Director of Student Activities had been added to the supervisory responsibilities of Student Affairs.
As it became apparent that expansion of services and new approaches might be necessary to meet the goals of the university and the needs of the students, open discussions involving students were held. Additional responsibilities delegated to Student Affairs over the years included career planning and residential learning centers. A variety of programs-concerning, for example, administrative interns, performing arts, child care, handicapped student services, and affirmative action-have been developed as the office has responded to changing student values and concerns. The office was renamed University and Student Affairs for a short time in 1977-1978, but has since reclaimed its original name. Student Affairs is one of the major organizational units within the university and is run by the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs.
