Biographical History
The Middlebury Garden Club was founded as the Middlebury Outdoor Circle in 1933, assuming its present name in 1935. Issues of interest and projects have included the Billboard Bill debated in the Vermont Legislature (1963-1965) and other highway beautification efforts, Battell Woods and Means Memorial Woods projects in Middlebury, a "garden therapy" project at the Elm St. group home in Middlebury, beautification of Porter Hospital and Porter Nursing Home and of Triangle Park in Middlebury, as well as encouraging interest in gardening and the environment in the schools and in the community. Membership chiefly of women.
