George Schumm graduated from Cornell in 1881. Born in Galena, Illinois, the son of German immigrants, he learned the printing trade in San Francisco, where he also published a radical German-language weekly. After working his way through Cornell, he published a number of radical periodicals including The Radical Review (Chicago), Transatlantic (N.Y.), and Liberty (N.Y.). He also served as a proofreader for The New York Evening Post and The Nation. He also translated works by Leo Tolstoy and others. He was described as a "philosophical anarchist."
