Alexander Smith journeyed to Australia in 1867 aboard the "Norfolk". He worked on sheep stations in Victoria beginning probably in Jingelic, near Albury. He died in Melbourne on 1 February 1924 aged 75. The donor notes that Smith was a heavy man, weighing 25 stone, and too heavy to ride a horse.
