Biographical History
Musician, bandmaster, and music teacher, of Portland, Me.; taught music and conducted bands in Belfast and Rumford, Me., before moving to Portland ca. 1914. In 1917, joined the U.S. Army where he organized and directed the Ralph D. Caldwell Post, American Legion, band as well as the 240th Coast Artillery Band; became first director of school bands in Portland, teaching at both Portland and Deering high schools. Devoted his life to teaching music, and even at the age of 100, continued to teach at least one student a day and, at the time, was believed to be the oldest music teacher in the country.
