Biographical History

William Clarke Quantrill was born in Canal Dover, Ohio in 1837. He came to Kansas as a young man, and taught school for a while before he became active in the border wars, between free state and pro-slavery forces in the fight for Kansas statehood. He fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War, participating in guerrilla warfare. His most infamous act as a guerrilla chief was the sack of Lawrence in the early morning of August 21, 1863. Quantrill died two years after the raid in a military hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
