Biographical History

Established in 1867 in Batavia, Ill. by Dr. R.J. Patterson as a private asylum for the insane and housed in what was once a school made of cut stone and surrounded by gardens and greenhouses, it catered to upper class women. Unlike most hospitals for the mentally ill of the time, restraints were not used and the surroundings were home like and quite luxurious.

From the description of Records, 1867- 1943 [1882-1936]. (Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library). WorldCat record id: 48034821
