Biographical History

Paul A. Wilhelm (1916- ) served in three Civilian Public Service Units: Camp 3, Patapsco, Md.; Camp 52, Powelsville Md.; and Camp 49, Philadelphia (Pa.) State Hospital. He registered as a Baptist conscientious objector but became a Quaker after his marriage to C. Jayne Tuttle in 1943. Jayne Tuttle Wilhelm (1917-1980) was a native of Helena, Montana, who went to New York in 1940, where she met Paul Wilhelm. She also became a Quaker, having been raised as an Episcopalian. These papers illuminate the experiences of a Civilian Public Service participant and his female counterpart. Paul Wilhelm later became an architect; Jayne Wilhelm was an artist and art teacher in public and private schools.
