Biographical History

Edward Fitch came to Kansas in 1855 as a representative of the New England Emigrant Aid Society of Boston. He settled in Lawrence and served as the first school teacher. In April 1857, he married Sarah Wilmarth; they had three children. During William Quantrill's raid in August of 1863 on Lawrence, Edward was killed by one of the raiders. The collection consists of correspondence from Edward to his family in the East. In his letters he discusses the pro- and anti-slavery conflicts in and around Lawrence, his finances, and daily life.
