Biographical History
The Vermont Glass Company, the first glass company in Vermont, was founded in 1810 and operated until 1818; the Lake Dunmore Glass Company occupied the same site in Salisbury, Vt., on Lake Dunmore from 1832 until 1843. In 1849, the Lake Dunmore Hotel Company was formed and purchased the land formerly owned by the Glass Company. William W. Goddard of Boston, Mass. purchased the hotel and most of the land around Lake Dunmore in 1860. Goddard operated the hotel unsuccessfully until 1870, when he sold it and auctioned off its furnishings, leading to a tangle of lawsuits and conflicting claims that were not resolved until 1900.
