Biographical History

Arthur H. Keeney, M.D., ophthalmologist and professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville. Keeney began researching the life of Frederick H. Verhoeff, which resulted in an interest in the Verhoeff family, a well known family in Louisville, Kentucky. Herman Verhoeff, Jr., the eldest of a family of six children, was a successful merchant and grain elevator operator. His son, Frederick H. Verhoeff earned a Ph.B. degree from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. Afterwards, Frederick went to medical school at John Hopkins University, where he received his M.D. During his career as an ophthalmologist, Verheoff earned a distinguished reputation. John McKee Verhoeff, a nephew of Herman Verhoeff, Jr., became famous in 1892 after his disappearance from the crew of Robert E. Peary, while attempting to reach the North Pole.
