Biographical History

William Hearle Lyall was rector of St. Dionis Church, Blackchurch, London, during the middle of the nineteenth century. His uncle, William Rowe Lyall (1788-1857), was Dean of the Cathedral of Canterbury. W.H. Lyall was a High Churchman associated with various Anglo-Catholic movements. He was a prominent member of the English Church Union (E.C.U.), an organization established in 1860 to consolidate the activities of the various local High Church groups that arose out of the Oxford movement of the 1830s. Lyall was also among the founders and later served as treasurer of the Society of the Holy Cross (S.H.C.), a High Church confraternity, and Honorable Secratary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (S.P.G.).
