Charles R. Burnham was appointed a professor in agronomy and plant genetics at the University of Minnesota in 1938. During his thirty-four years of teaching at the University, Burnham was well known for his work on the cytogenetics of corn. After retiring, he founded the Chestnut Foundation, which worked to develop a breed of Chestnut tree capable of resisting Chestnut Blight. Charles Burnham died in St. Paul on April 19, 1995.
