The four-year Medical College of Alabama began operations in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1945. The Medical College was a unit of the University of Alabama. Dr. Robert C. Berson served as the third full-time dean from 1955 to 1962. He also served concurrently as vice president for health affairs. During his tenure, Berson continued efforts to acquired additional lands on which the Medical Center could expand. He also faced the continuing problem of financing indigent patient care at University Hospital. Dr. Berson became disenchanged with the Medical College especially after the appointment of Richard T. Eastwood as executive director of university affairs for the Medical Center. Berson then reported through Eastwood to the president of the University of Alabama instead of directly to the president. Dr. Berson resigned his two positions in 1962.
