Biographical History

Jerome Beers Thomas, Jr. practiced medicine in The Army Medical Corps during the Spanish-American War. Mary Denison (Wilt) Thomas, a graduate from Wellesley College who developed a precise talent for sketching and watercolor painting, joined her husband in the Philippines where they lived from 1900 to 1905. In 1913 they settled in Palo Alto, where Jerome continued to practice medicine until 1917 and Denison took an active role in civic affairs, becoming one of two women to first be elected to the Palo Alto City Council in 1919-1923. Jerome died in 1948, and Denison, a charter member of Channing House, died on July 1, 1983, at the age of 108.
