E. Wayne Courtney earned four degrees from Purdue University: B.S., Forestry, 1953; B.S., Agriculture, 1957; M.S., Agricultural Education, 1958; Ph. D., Measurement, 1962. Courtney did postdoctorate work in statistics at Oregon State University in 1968. Courtney was appointed assistant professor in the Stout State University (Wisconsin) School of Education in 1962. In 1972, he became Professor and Director of Research and Development in OSU's Division of Vocational, Adult, and Community College Education. Courtney has held a number of faculty appointments at OSU: Professor and Director, Division of Vocational-Technical Education, 1973-1978; Professor, Department of Statistics, 1973-1983; Professor, Department of Educational Foundations, 1985-1989; Professor and Chair, Division of Secondary Education (OSU/WOSC), 1988-1989; Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, 1989-1993; and Professor Emeritus, 1993-
E. Wayne Courtney was born on April 15, 1931 in Elnora, Indiana. He was an Eagle Scout before the age of 16. After graduating from high school as class valedictorian in 1949, he enrolled in Purdue University, from which he earned four degrees: B.S., Forestry, 1953; B.S., Agriculture, 1957; M.S., Agricultural Education, 1958; Ph.D., Measurement, 1962. Courtney did postdoctorate work in statistics at Oregon State University in 1968.
After serving in the U.S. Army in Germany (1953-1955) and as a vocational education teacher and instructor in Indiana secondary schools (1958-1960) and at Purdue (1960-1962), Courtney was appointed assistant professor in the Stout State University (Wisconsin) School of Education in 1962. He remained at Stout State until 1972, when he became Professor and Director of Research and Development in OSU's Division of Vocational, Adult, and Community College Education. Courtney has held a number of faculty appointments at OSU: Professor and Director, Division of Vocational-Technical Education, 1973-1978; Professor, Department of Statistics, 1973-1983; Professor, Department of Educational Foundations, 1985-1989; Professor and Chair, Division of Secondary Education (OSU/WOSC), 1988-1989; Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, 1989-1993; and Professor Emeritus, 1993-date.
Courtney has also been a visiting faculty member at North Carolina State University (1966-67), OSU (1970-71), Coleg Prifysgol Cymru in Wales and University of Exeter in England (1983-84), and Instituto Educacional F. D. Roosevelt in Lima, Peru (1984-85). Recently he has served as a faculty member in the Kasetsart University (Thailand) Department of Sports Science, where he teaches research design and statistics.
Courtney twice served in the OSU Faculty Senate, 1979-81 and 1986-88; was a member of the OSU Press Board of Governors, 1981-1984; and served on various OSU committees, including the OSU Library Expansion Faculty Advisory Committee. He received OSU's Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award for 1985-86 and was a Senior Collaborative Fulbright Research Scholar to Thailand in 1994-95.
