Biographical History

Men's Intercollegiate Golf at Iowa State began under the direction of Coach Hugo Otopalik (1931). Another notable coach for the Iowa State Golf program was Coach Dale Anderson who coached the Cyclones for thirty successful years (1969-1999). During the Jay Horton era, the Golf team had three Academic All-Americans in Aaron Patton (2000), Kevin Oswald (2002), and Greg Stephanson (2002). In 1937, the Iowa State team began golfing on the college's new 18-hole golf course. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed the course during the Great Depression. The George F. Veenker Memorial Golf Course, named after the Athletic Director who worked to get the course started at Iowa State, was the home to all Iowa State Golf practices and home meets until the 2000 season.
