Historical note: The cabin where Abraham Lincoln was born was located on what once was part of the 348 acre Sinking Spring Farm in Hardin County (now Larue County), Kentucky owned by his father, Thomas Lincoln. The cabin was purchased by New York businessperson, A. W. Dennett, and moved to the initial site of the Sinking Spring Farm in 1894. Later, the cabin was dismantled, rebuilt and moved by railway as a touring exhibition.

A number of people, including Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), Ida M. Tarbell, Richard Lloyd Jones, and Robert Collier, became interested in preserving Lincoln's birthplace and, along with others, organized the Lincoln Farm Association. The association bought the farm in 1905, purchased the cabin the following year, and raised money for a memorial building, designed by John Russell Pope, to house the cabin. The cornerstone was laid in 1909 by President Theodore Roosevelt and the finished memorial was dedicated by President William Howard Taft in 1911. The memorial became a national park in 1916 and a national historic site in 1959.
