Theodore Roosevelt Schellenberg was the son of A.L. & Sarah Schellenberg. He was born in 1903 in Reno County, Kan. He received elementary education at McPherson (1908-12) and Hillsboro (1912-15), Kan. T.R. attended high school at Hillsboro (1916-18) and Tabor Academy (Hillsboro, Kan.) (1919-22). He attended Tabor College (Hillsboro), 1924-26, and transferred to the University of Kansas (Lawrence) receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1928 and a master's degree in 1930. He was a history professor at the University of Kansas 1929-30. He joined the staff of the National Archives (U.S.) and rose to the position of deputy archivist of the U.S. While there, he became the country's pre-eminent archival theorist and wrote several books on archival theory & practice. He also taught at universities worldwide and consulted with archives in many countries, especially in Latin America.
Abraham Schellenberg (1845-1920)--a farmer and Mennonite elder, of southern Russia, Kansas--was the grandfather of T.R. Schellenberg. Abraham married Katherina Lohrenz in 1869. A.L. (Abraham Lohrenz, 1869-1941)--a newspaperman, farmer, of Kansas, Texas--was their son. The family migrated to Kansas in the late 1870s because Katherina's parents were already there. Abraham, Katherina, and their five children settled in Garden Township, Harvey County, Kan., amidst relatives.
