Jabez Thomas Sunderland (1842-1936) was an influential Unitarian minister and a leading anti-imperialist in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was born in Yorkshire, England, but his family soon moved to the United States where he was educated at the University of Chicago (A.B., 1867; A.M., 1869) and the Baptist Union Theological Seminary (B.D., 1870).
Sunderland entered the Baptist ministry even before he finished his seminary work and served churches in Omaha and Milwaukee. By 1872, his liberal religious beliefs caused him to leave the Baptist church and accept a position with the Unitarian church of Northfield, Massachusetts. He stayed in Northfield for four years and then served as minister at Unitarian churches in Chicago (1876-1878), Ann Arbor (1878-1898), Oakland, California (1898-1899), London, England (1900-1901), Toronto, Canada (1901-1907), Hartford, Connecticut (1907-1911), Ottawa, Canada (1912-1913) and Poughkeepsie, New York (1914-1927).
