He was born in Poland and came to Chicago in 1905, where he attended DePaul University and the Illinois College of Chiropody. Active in both political parties, he was the 33rd Ward Republican committeeman in the 1920s and an aldermanic candidate. He was the Republican candidate for Congress from the 8th District in 1928. Later, he worked for the Democratic Party and was a campaign manager for Judge Edmund K. Jarecki. Hetman served in the Army during the First World War and was active as a veteran. He founded the Catholic War Veterans and the Polish War Veterans in Chicago. During the Second World War, he was secretary of the American Slav Congress, an anti-Nazi organization. Later in his life, Hetman became a real estate developer, operating his firm out of his home.
