Biographical History

Candlemas Lectures, Program at Boston College.

Candlemas Lectures were established by William Leonard, S.J., in 1947 for the purpose of stimulating interest in the field of Christian literature. In 1978, under the direction of Francis J. Sweeney, S.J., the lectures became part of Boston College's Humanities Series. These lectures continue to be held annually under the auspices of what is now called the Lowell Humanities Series.

Leonard, a professor in the Boston College English and Theology Departments, founded and served as the director of the Candlemas Lectures from 1947-1977.
