Biographical History

Stuart Queen was born in 1890, in Fredonia, Kansas. He entered Pomona College in 1906, majoring in Greek. In 1908, Queen transferred to University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he developed his life-long interest in sociology. He then returned to Pomona to complete his undergraduate degree. Queen received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 1919.

Queen was Professor of Social Economy and Director of the School of Social Work at Simmons College (1920-1922), Professor of Sociology at University of Kansas (1922-1930), and Professor of Sociology at Washington University, St. Louis (1932-1958).

Queen's published works include: The Passing of the County Jail (1920), and Social Work in the Light of History (1922), as well as several co-authored books: Social Pathology (1925), Social Organization and Disorganization (1935), The City: A Study of Urbanism in the United States (1937), and The Family in Various Cultures (1961).

Stuart Alfred Queen died on September 28, 1987.
