Alfred Mossman Landon was born at West Middlesex, Pa., in 1887. He was educated at Elba and Marietta, Ohio, before the family moved to Independence, Kan., in 1904. After one year of academic work at the University of Kansas (Lawrence), he transferred to the Law School there and received his L.L.B. degree in 1908. Landon instead chose to work as a bank clerk at the First National Bank in Independence then followed his father into the oil business. He served as Kansas governor 1930-34.
