Biographical History

Philip Dunham Reed (1899-1989) received an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in electrical engineering and a law degree from Fordam University. He went to work in the law department of the General Electric Company in 1927 and was appointed assistant to president Gerard Swope ten years later. In 1939 he became chairman of the board. He held this position for eighteen years until his retirement.

During World War II Reed served as a "dollar-a-year man" at the Office of Production Management. In 1942 he was assigned to assist W. Averill Harriman as deputy chief of the U.S. Mission of Economic Affairs in London. He became chief of the mission in October 1943.

During the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Reed was active with the Council on Foreign Relations, the Committee for Economic Development, the International Chamber of Commerce, and the Business Advisory Council.
