Biographical History

Richard A. Blount was born to John and Mary (Ridley) Blount on 1 August 1774 in Southhampton County, Virginia. He received a classical education from tutors in Virginia and North Carolina. Blount travelled extensively in the West Indies, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. He emigrated to Georgia in 1803, settling at Lebanon, Washington County, near Milledgeville. Blount served as postmaster of Milledgeville, and in 1816 was appointed Aide-de-Camp in the Georgia Militia. He was also a planter.

In 1826 Blount was appointed to serve on the Georgia-Alabama Boundary Survey Commission by Governor George M. Troup. In 1829, Governor George Gilmer appointed him as a commissioner of the Oconee Navigation Association.

Blount married Mary Edmunds Dawson of Southhampton County, Virgina ca.1796. Their only surviving child, Mary Ann Ridley, was born in 1802. She married John W. A. Sanford of Milledgeville ca.1824.

Blount was a Mason and Elder in the Methodist Protestant Church. He died 24 Dec. 1849 at his home in Georgia.
