William Nafew Haskell (b. Aug. 13, 1878, Albany, New York-d. Aug. 13, 1952), Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army, was commissioned in the cavalry from West Point in 1901. He served in the Philippines (three tours) and as regimental commander in Mexico. During World War I, he was assistant chief of staff of the 77th Division, then chief of operations and deputy chief of staff for the Second Army, American Expeditionary Force. After the War he was assigned as chief of the American relief mission to Russia (1921-1923). After earning a law degree in 1925, he resigned from the Army and was appointed Major General and commander of the New York National Guard. General Haskell was called to active duty as commanding general of the 27th Division in the lead-up to World War II and retired in August 1942.
