Vos, Bert John, 1867-1945

Bert J. Vos was a professor of German at Indiana University from 1908-1937, and Professor Emeritus of German from 1937-1945.

Born October 27, 1867 in Katwijk ann Zee, the Netherlands, Bert J. Vos moved to the United States in 1881. He attended the University of Michigan where he earned his A.B. in 1888. From there he attended John Hopkins University and the University of Leipzig, receiving his Ph.D. from John Hopkins University in 1892.

Prior to coming to Indiana University in 1908, Dr. Vos taught at the University of Chicago and John Hopkins University. He was the head of the Department of German at I. U. from 1908-1937. After his retirement in 1937, Dr. Vos was named Professor Emeritus of German, a title he held until his death in 1945.

Outside of I. U., Dr. Vos served as the Chairman of the Western Section of the Modern Language Association, and the president of the Association of Modern Language Teachers of the Central West and South. From 1918-1919, Dr. Vos served as special assistant to the American Legation at the Hague and was a member of the American mission to Berlin. Dr. Vos authored several books, including German Lyrics and Ballads from Klopsotck to Modern Time and Essentials of German, and was the editor of several German publications.
