Biographical History
Captain George Seldon Dexter was a naturalized United States citizen, born in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1876. He joined Grace Lines in 1915 as second mate on the Santa Catalina (freighter), and left that vessel in 1917 having attained the rank of first officer. From November 1917 to January 1918 he was chief officer of the same vessel, which was renamed the Black Hawk (USN). Following the end of World War I, Captain Dexter returned to Grace Lines; in 1929 and 1930 he was Captain of the Chilol (steam vessel). Captain Dexter was the author of numerous pieces of short fiction, popular history articles, and informational "excitements" for the popular press.
