Jacob Dolson Cox (1828-1900), lawyer, soldier, statesman, and scholar, was elected to the State Senate of Ohio in 1858. When the Civil War broke out, he was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers in Ohio. He fought in the battles of Antietam, Atlanta, Franklin (Tenn.), and Nashville and was promoted to Major General. Cox served one term as Governor of Ohio (1866-67), and opened a law practice in Cincinnati. In 1869 he was appointed Secretary of the Interior under President U.S. Grant, and resigned in 1870. He reentered politics in 1876, serving one term as representative of the 6th Ohio district, U.S. Congress. In 1881 Cox became Dean of the Cincinnati Law School serving concurrently as President of the University of Cincinnati during 1885-89. He took up the study of microscopy as an avocation, and published some thirty articles on the subject. He completed his memoir "Military Reminiscences of the Civil War" shortly before his death in 1900.
