Biographical History
Chicano activist and political organizer in southern California, Herman Baca was born in Los Lentes, New Mexico, on April 5, 1943, and moved with his family to National City, California, in 1954. After high school he worked as a printer, establishing his own business, Aztec Printing, in 1969. Baca was active in local electoral politics beginning in the early 1960s, first in the Republican party and later as an independent. He organized the National City chapter of the Mexican-American Political Association (MAPA) in 1968, the San Diego County chapter of La Raza Unida Party, and serves as longtime chairman and one of several founders of the Committee on Chicano Rights (CCR), a volunteer organization promoting human, civil, and constitutional rights for the Chicano community.
