American judge, delegate from Virginia to the Constitutional Convention and associate justice on the Supreme Court from 1789-1796.

John Blair, the writer of this letter was a Virginian legal scholar, educated at the College of William and Mary and studied law at London's Middle Temple. He was a delegate from Virginia to the U.S. Constitutional Convention (1787) and served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1790-1795). His father, also called John Blair (1687-1771) served on the Virginia Council and was at one time the acting Royal Governor of Virginia.
