Biographical History

The Missionary Education Department, as with other departments in the Women's Missionary Federation (WMF) of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960) (ALC), had its beginning in a WMF predecessor organization. The Women's Missionary Conference of the Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States created a Literature Department in 1924. This department was responsible for producing educational and promotional material that highlighted the church's mission work, as well as work of the women's conference. It produced pamphlets, leaflets, missionary literature, reading courses, and book lists for women members, as well as junior members. When the merger that created the WMF took place in 1931, the Literature Department moved its headquarters to 57 East Main Street, Columbus, Ohio. Much of the same work, including the production of the WMF official publication Women's Missionary Outlook, continued in the new Missionary Education Department. The department also promoted its work through the creation of sample packets of materials available for use by congregations.
