Biographical History
Pioneer family at Mescalero, New Mexico, where Joseph H. Blazer took over the operation of a sawmill in 1868. The family mill was the scene of a battle during the Lincoln County War. Blazer became prominent in the region, serving as a postmaster and county commissioner. In 1874 Blazer was licensed as a trader on the Mescalero reservation. His son, A.N. (Almer Newman), assisted Blazer with mill and trading post operations. Paul A. Blazer, A.N.'s son, served as water commissioner of Tularosa Canyon. Joseph H. Blazer's daughter, Emma, married J. Howard Thompson, the first physician assigned to the reservation.
