Biographical History

Sir Henry Cole, English journalist, civil servant, and product designer, and originator of the Christmas card. Cole was the editor of the 1875 edition of the collected works of Thomas Love Peacock.

Henry Cole was a designer, artist, and publisher. As director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, he organized the Great Exhibition of 1851; he introduced the penny postage system; invented the adhesive stamp; and published the first Christmas card. He was secretary of the Science and Art Dept. of the Committee of Council on Education, and director of the South Kensington Museum.
