Biographical History

American theatrical producer.

From the description of Florenz Ziegfeld Collection, 1893-1979 (bulk 1910-1930). (Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (HRC); University of Texas at Austin). WorldCat record id: 79415204

Florenz Ziegfeld was born in Chicago in 1867. He was sent to Europe to recruit talent for his father's show at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, but returned instead with a circus strongman named Eugene Shadow who became the surprise hit of the season. Over the next 14 years he promoted many theatrical sucesses and in 1907 got his big break producing the Follies of 1907, a musical revue which became known for its chorus line of dancing "Ziegfeld Girls". His success continued throughout the late 1920s until the rise of the motion picture sent theatre-goers to the silver screen. He died in 1932 leaving his widow, Billie Burke, in a financial crisis forcing her to sell the rights to the Ziegfeld Follies name.
